MSC, a global leader in transportation and logistics, has announced a successful start to a new dedicated reefer rail service for Spain which capitalizes on the latest flexible technology for onboard power generation.
The first commercial voyage took place on 17 October 2019, between Zaragoza and Valencia, and the service will soon be extended to Barcelona. It’s a dedicated reefer rail service, for refrigerated and frozen cargo, connecting food producers in Aragon and northeastern Spain directly with major markets across the world, via MSC’s global ocean liner network.
MSC’s subsidiary MEDLOG has developed this unique reefer rail solution to meet growing demand for cargo-carrying trains which provide continuity along the cold chain, from origin to destination.
MEDLOG’s new tailor-made solution has multiple power sources onboard – small generator units called GenSets – to minimise the risk of impact from power outages, compared with trains with a single power source.
The GenSets used by MEDLOG are government-certified equipment with a variety of additional benefits including sound proofing to reduce noise.
The new reefer rail service is expected to operate initially twice a week, with an option to increase the frequency in future, building on MSC’s commitment to offer a wide range of logistics solutions in Iberian markets.
In recent years, MSC has also been able to offer a new freight rail service in the South of Spain and a rail service between Seville, Spain, and the Atlantic.
