Box volumes up 12.2% in Jan at PSA's Singapore terminals
PSA's Singapore terminals and Jurong Port together handled 2.17 million 20-foot standard containers last month, 11 per cent more than in January the previous year.
According to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore data, PSA handled 2.1 million boxes, while Jurong Port handled 71,000 in January. For PSA, last month's container throughput was 12.2 per cent more than what the Singapore terminal operator handled in January 2006, while for Jurong it was a 7.8 per cent decrease.
Increasing demand for low-cost goods made in Asia by the US and Europe is boosting volumes handled at terminals of PSA, Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa and other port operators. Singapore processed a record number of boxes last year.
Bouyed by expanding trade around the world, PSA International turned in a record year in 2006 when it handled a total of 51.29 million boxes across its 20 port projects in 11 countries, an 18.6 per cent increase over the previous year.
The Singapore terminals alone handled 23.98 million TEUs . PSA's performance here helped the Singapore port achieve a total of 24.8 million TEUs handled, making the Republic the world's busiest container port again.
