Two dead as South Korean ship sinks off Japan
At least two crewmen from Myanmar were killed when a South Korean cargo ship sank in bad weather off the Japanese coast, officials said yesterday. Another crew member was in critical condition while six others were still missing, officials said.
The Zenith Light, which had 11 crew on board, issued a distress signal on Wednesday and later sank 23 km off the coast, a Japan Coast Guard official said. The coast guard recovered the bodies of two men from Myanmar aged 27 and 31. Another sailor, whose nationality was not immediately clear, was rescued at sea yesterday but was in a critical condition, the official said.
The crew included four South Koreans, five Myanmar nationals and two Indonesians.
'We believe the foundering was due to bad weather in the region,' the official said. The 2,016-tonne cargo vessel was on its way to South Korea's port of Pohang.
