It was quickly cleaned up and there was no apparent environmental damage, the department said. The spill occurred about 6:15 p.m., about two hours after the vessel Protecteur -- a Canadian navy fueling ship -- had taken on 50,000 barrels of diesel and 6,000 barrels of jet fuel, Ecology spokeswoman Joye Redfield-Wilder said.
A containment boom was already in place around the ship, and crew members used absorbent materials to capture the fuel in the water, she said. No oil was found outside the boom.
A possible valve problem may have caused the spill, Redfield-Wilder said.
