Container congestion hits Dar es Salaam port (Tanzania)
Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Lowassa has ordered the immediate decongestion of Dar es Salaam port where 10,000 containers, nearly 4,000 boxes above its capacity, have been stacked up causing long delays at the facility.
The head of the government said the containers should be removed within the shortest possible time, adding that premises formerly owned by the defunct National Shipping Agency Company (Nasaco) and those of Usafiri Dar es Salaam (UDA) should be used as an emergency measure to rid the port of the containers.
Infrastructure Development Minister Andrew Chenge has been assigned to supervise the emergency move. It had been agreed earlier to move all containers to Ubungo Inland Terminal, which has a capacity of 4,000 containers. Latest reports suggest that only 117 containers have been moved to Ubungo.
