The motor pool's remaining seven vehicles will be replaced with hybrids by the end of next year, and the port's broader goal is to replace the entire car and pickup fleet (approximately 210 vehicles) with 100 per cent hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles by the end of FY 2013 or sooner.
The statement said that in addition to the Honda Hybrids, the port has recently purchased four new Ford Escape Hybrids (SUVs) with more on the way. The port has also procured five new hard-to-get GMC Hybrid Sierra pickup trucks.
President of the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners Anthony Batarse said: "This is another example of one of the many steps we are taking to reduce emissions from port activities." To date, the Port of Oakland has procured approximately 52 low or zero-emission vehicles, which is equivalent to about 25 per cent of the sedan and pickup fleet.
