Container berth in Adelaide to open on Saturdays

Adelaide's Outer Harbour freight terminal is to open for business on Saturdays for the first time in its 30-year history in the face of unprecedented container volumes, which are causing delays and truck queues.
An article in the daily Advertiser newspaper said that up to 15 trucks have been seen waiting outside the terminal to load at peak times, stretching 500 metres from the gate to Victoria Road.
The terminal's operator DP World Adelaide general manager Andrew Towers said the facility would open Saturdays and had also extended its hours during the week.
The company hoped to announce soon a spending programme to upgrade the berth, which might include adding two express loading lanes to the eight-lane terminal.
An extra 4,175 containers were handled in February, above its 11,000 capacity, with January volumes also higher than expected.
