EU fears US demands for container checks

On Thursday, European commissioner László Kovács, responsible for Customs Affairs, reiterated his concerns regarding the stringent measures to be imposed by the Unites States on containers imported into America. It would mean that all containers would have to be scanned before being shipped to the US.
Last week, the US Congress again confirmed its support for the regulations, which are aimed at preventing terrorist attacks. According to Kovács, experts on both sides of the Atlantic agree that this costly and time-wasting measure will be of little help. According to him, the US has pushed through the measure without waiting for the evaluation of a test, in which the EU also took part. Kovács argues in favour of the selected scanning of containers on the basis of a risk analysis. The time frame for implementation of the US legislation is five years.
