Kalmar, the business area providing container handling solutions within Cargotec, has received an order for 30 straddle carriers from Italian Medcenter Container Terminal SpA (MCT). The straddle carriers will be delivered at the end of year 2007 and in the beginning of 2008 to MCT’s terminal in Gioia Tauro in Southern Italy. MCT already has 100 Kalmar straddle carriers in use.
MCT is one of the most significant transshipment operators in the Mediterranean area. It handles over 3 million TEU annually. Straddle carriers are ideally suited to transshipment hubs because of their flexibility and versatility: the same machine transports, loads, unloads and stacks containers. At the MCT terminal each straddle carrier handles approximately 30,000 containers per year. The unit price of a straddle carrier varies between EUR 700,000–900,000.
