Indian ports face strike

Local news reports yesterday said that port workers nationwide have threatened to strike from September 1 if the Indian government does not accept their recent demands such as higher wages.
According to parent union the All India Port & Dockers Workers' Federation, notice of an indefinite strike will be issued to individual port managements on August 16.
The notice will state the commencement of a complete nationwide strike from September 1 or any day thereafter if the demands are not met.
The union said that important issues regarding the workers have been pending with the government for a long time and there has been no response from either the Minister of Shipping or Labour.
Currently the individual federations have demanded restoration of the retirement age to 60 years and the merger of 50% DA with pay effectively accountable from April 1, 2005.
Other demands include interim relief to workers including pensioners with effect from January 1 this year and the filling up of vacancies including promotional vacancies.
The federations are also insisting that regular jobs should not be contracted out or outsourced and major ports should not be privatized.
Senior leaders of all the major federations have urged the Minister of Shipping and Minister of Labour to intervene and “do justice to the workers,” said reports.
