Swedish and Russian icebreaker pair to the Arctic
On Sunday, the Swedish icebreaker Oden will depart from Tromsö in Norway for the Arctic for a six week long Danish/Swedish research expedition. They will aim for an area north of Greenland where no researchers have been before. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat leads the expedition and has also chartered in the new Russian nuclear icebreaker 50 let pobedy to assist Oden in the massive pack ice.
This is the ninth visit to the Arctic for Oden that in 1991 reached the North Pole as the first non-nuclear propelled vessel. 50 let pobedy is the world’s largest icebreaker. It was delivered in March this year, but construction of the vessel began already in 1989.
