Eleven workers were injured – one of them critically – following a blast at Hyundai Samho Shipyard at Mokpo this morning. The injured were employed by sub-contractors. The explosion occurred during welding work to install a hatch cover. Police are investigating the cause of the accident. They are looking into a possible faulty pipeline, which may have caused gas to escape and explode when ignited by sparks from the welding machine. South Korea’s biggest shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has been operating the Samho yard since 1999. Hyundai Samho specialises in building large ships of varied types.
