CMA CGM will introduce 200 new Trans-Rak containers into its fleet later this month. Each container can carry four vehicles at a time. The multi-purpose 40-ft containers offer an alternative to transporting vehicles on pure car carrier vessels. With cars shipped directly from production line to distribution centres with no handling in between, the risk of theft and/or damage is greatly reduced. Featuring a system of retractable ramps, the containers can also be used for other purposes. According to Alexis Michel, CMA CGM's vice president of container logistics, around ten million cars worldwide are transported by car carriers, and another one million are shipped in containers. CMA CGM plans to purchase another batch of the containers by the end of the year to meet demand for its car carrying service.
