The Dalian Port Co. Ltd. together with Norwegian operator Odfjell ASA have signed a strategic agreement with the Administrative Committee of the Caofeidian Industrial Zone to design, build and operate the new oil terminal facilities.
Odfjell told the press that the project will see China's largest reclamation of land for a port totaling 310 km². China's Central Government has said that this project will become the “Rotterdam” of China due to its privileged location within the Bohai Sea.
The new oil terminal port is expected to be a gateway for serving metropolitan Beijing along with providing road and rail connectivity to the northern hinterland of China.
Industry players say that with its unique geographical conditions, such as natural deep-water draft adjacent to a 25 metre-deep natural water channel extending from Caofeidian directly to the Huanghai Sea, the oil port will allow access for the largest deep-sea oil products and petrochemical tankers.
