According to the data India's 12 major ports handled 164 million tonnes of cargo from April to July, a 15% rise from 143 million tonnes in the same period last year.
Reports say that this figure however still falls short of the 169 million tonnes targeted by the Ministry of Shipping for the four-month period.
Of the 12 ports, only Chennai, Kandla, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) and New Mangalore surpassed their individual targets.
The port of Kandla handled the most cargo during this four-month period with a throughput of 20.8 million tonnes, followed by Visakhapatnam with 20.6 million tonnes and Chennai with 19 million tonnes.
First quarter results already saw Kandla pip perennial no.1 Visakhapatnam to the top cargo port spot, with the Kandla Port Trust (KPT) authorities saying that Kandla handled 15.51 million tonnes over Visakhapatnam's 15.20 million tonnes.
Kandla's first quarter volumes, a massive 38.6% year-on-year, had pushed Kandla past Visakhapatnam for the first time in many years.
