Japan is the world's second-largest shipbuilding country by deliveries in a global market headed to another record, spurred by orders for container ships and bulk carriers. AP Moeller-Maersk A/S, the world's largest shipping line, and its peers are buying vessels to supply iron ore, coal and oil to China and export manufactured goods to Europe and the US.
IHI's sales from shipbuilding, its original business, accounted for 11 per cent of total revenue for the past year. Japan's third-largest maker of heavy machinery also builds boilers, liquefied natural gas terminals and car turbochargers.
