The container traffic has shown 32% increase due to the timely marketing efforts made by the Port and also additions to the infrastructure facilities like purchase of Reach Stacker, extension and hardening of container stackyard and increasing the Reefer Plug points. Port handled 1.95 million tonnes of railway traffic as against 0.8 million tonnes last year, showing an increase of 124%.
To synchronize with the commissioning of HMRD line on 5th May, 2006, Port made all out efforts to renovate all the 5 railway lines, laying platforms and installed high power tower lights which enabled round the clock operations. Also 4 more lines were added by M/s. Kudremukh. All these railway related activities have made the railway traffic in and out of Mangalore Port smooth and recorded impressive increase in traffic.
The cost of movement of cargo from New Mangalore Port to the Hinterland has also shown drastic reduction in freight and time. Hassan Mangalore distance has now considerably reduced to 260 kms from 1038 kms., thereby the freight has come down to Rs. 229 per tonne from Rs. 727 per tonne. The freight for Davangere is now Rs. 349 (old Rate Rs. 595), Hospet - Rs. 487 ( Rs. 595), Shimoga - Rs. 316 (Rs. 710) and Mysore - Rs. 290 (Rs. 677).
Shri P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, while requesting the traders to make optimum use of the advantageous position of NMPT, is optimistic about the growth of traffic and efficient service provided to the trade by the Port.
