That contract was one of a $600 million package of contracts the Mayaguez authorities signed with external companies to upgrade and develop its cargo handling and cruise facilities over the next ten years.
Other than the Holland Group, Mayaguez investors include the port of Rotterdam, Dutch port design firm Lievense, Prota Construction Co. and KPMG Curacao.
Mayaguez Mayor Jose Guillermo Rodriguez said that Mayaguez's entry into international shipping came at a time of a decline in some of the region's traditional industries, including tuna fishing and clothes production.
He said the latest developments would boost the volume of trade through Mayaguez, especially in terms of transshipment. Mayaguez is scheduled to host the Central American & Caribbean Games in 2010.
The games are expected to trigger a period of economic growth and the port of Mayaguez has to have the necessary infrastructure, Rodriguez added.
