Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov considers it necessary to change ‘game rules’ in the fishing industry, ITAR TASS reports.
“First of all, fishing companies should be interested in the construction of fishing vessels,” he told journalists on Friday.
“An owner should be confident that in several years a new vessel will become operational and will finally compensate for funds injected. Meanwhile, quota recipients absolutely have no motivation to build vessels, as they want to sell their quotas,” he said.
Ivanov came up with an initiative to consolidate the county’s fishing industry.
“Many fishing companies exist by means of selling fishing quotas, the so-called ‘quota rentiers’,” he said.
“At present, there are several thousands of fishing companies in Russia that own one and a half fishing vessels, while Russia should have no more than 20-30 such companies,” he said.
“Companies are not interested in buying new fishing vessels, as so many companies are operating,” he said.
