Construction of a deep-water port in Archangelsk may be finished by 2012-2014

Construction of a deep-water port in Archangelsk may be finished by 2012-2014, Vladimir Voikov, first deputy head of Archangelsk region Administration told at the meeting with Alexander Davydenko, Head of the Federal Agency of Marine and River Transport, Archangelsk region administration reports according to PRIME-TASS. According to Mr. Voikov, an investor has already been found for financing of the port construction. Mr. Davydenko noted the region’s advantage is the possibility to accept cargo delivered by sea without extra transshipment. However field development implies participation of large-capacity vessels. “If the region has a deep-water port transportation will be cheaper. A number of 50,000- 60,000-dwt tankers which are under construction today will be able to enter the yet-to-be built port,” Mr. Davydenko said.

The meeting was also dedicated to the issue of dredging works. According to Mr. Davydenko, financing of these activities is quite stable. However, more and more navigable rivers require deepening. The complete length of Russia’s internal waterways totals some 102,000 kilometers, half of them need dredging works. Every year some RUR 11 billion are allocated for this purpose including RUR 170-180 million for Archangelsk region. Mr. Davydenko says it will take five years to make all Russia’s internal waterways safe for navigation.
