Philip Brown, NYK's international business unit director, says: "While the use of rail is currently restricted by the lack of infrastructure, the government recognises the need to invest in the UK's rail network, both to ease congestion and to reduce CO2 emissions. "As a logistics service provider, NYK recognises that our customers increasingly expect us to exploit different modes of transport to deliver environmentally-friendly supply-chain solutions. We are working closely with our customers to provide this." NYK books the containers with train operators EWS and Freightliner (Logico). Last year, EWS invested in its terminal at the Port of Southampton to treble the number of containers it can handle there each year.
David Cross, EWS network sales and marketing manager, adds: "Through investment in our terminal at the Port of Southampton, we have created the capacity to move more containers by rail. "We are delighted to be working with NYK Logistics, ensuring its customers gain a lower level of CO2 emissions per tonne-mile moved than with road haulage."
