After shutting down port and bunkering activities in Taiwan yesterday, the typhoon, packing winds of 155 kilometres per hour (km/h), caused 1.6 million residents of the Chinese coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian to be evacuated following today's landfall.
Port operations along the south-eastern coast have been suspended, local sources said today.
Ports that were shut include Changjiang, Xiamen, Jinshan, Ningbo, Shanghai and Zhejiang. The ports are expected to remain close for at least three days.
The affected ports are in the path of the gale-force winds while ferry services have been suspended and fishing vessels ordered back to harbour.
Reports say that ships near the coast have been warned to be on high alert.
