JV consortium to build 16 new container berths in Singapore

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has awarded a $1.92 billion construction contract to a joint venture (JV) consortium to develop 16 new container berths at Pasir Panjang.
This project, scheduled to add 14 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT)'s container handling capacity, is part of PPT's third and fourth phase development.
Completion of second phase development will already boost PSA's total handling capacity in Singapore to 35 million TEUs.
Local news reports say that the first two phases of PPT, with a total of 26 berths, will reach final completion within the next two years, while third and fourth phases of development are scheduled for completion over the next 10 years.
According to PSA South-east Asia and Singapore Terminals chief executive officer Kuah Boon Wee, future plans over the next decade for PSA include adding at least 20 million TEUs of capacity and 10 kilometres of quay.
It is understood that land reclamation will have to be undertaken for third and fourth phase development.
The JV consortium consists of Penta Ocean Construction Co Ltd, Koon Construction & Transport Co Pte Ltd, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors.
Sources close to the project say that the JV consortium will be responsible for reclaiming the land needed along with laying down basic infrastructure and berthing before PSA takes over to outfit the superstructure.
MPA says that work will commence in the last quarter of 2007 and will take about six years to complete.
Meanwhile, PSA Singapore Terminals is to spend $264 million buying container handling cranes in one of the biggest single port equipment purchases ever made.
Some 30 super post-Panamax quay cranes, from China's Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) will be delivered starting from next year.
The cranes will be custom-made to handle the latest generation of container ships with capacities in excess of 13,000 TEUs.
This equipment purchase forms part of PSA's $5 billion investment in PPT over the past 10 years.
