The Koja container handling facilities are owned and run by state port operator PT Pelindo II.
Local news reports say that the residents are demanding compensation from Pelindo II for land it acquired in 1994 to build the terminal.
According to one land owner, the land had been valued at only $10 per square metre when Pelindo II re-located as many as 4,200 families from the 92 hectare plot 13 years ago.
“They paid a low price because they said we did not possess legal land certificates, claiming the land still belonged to the colonial government (then),” he said.
“But some of us really did have the (land ownership) certificates,” he added.
It is currently unclear whether the blockade has ended, and there are conflicting reports as to the extent of disruption to Koja's container handling activities.
One local source however, told Portworld today that the residents will not cease the blockade until their demands have been resolved.
