Port of Qingdao throughput up to 836 000 TEU in January

Port of Qingdao has announced that it has handled 836,000 TEU in January - that's more than 26,000 TEU than the entire port handled in all of 1996.
Overall tonnage amounted to 25 million tonnes, 800,000 tonnes more than 1984's annual volume. Both January volumes are monthly records.
The port is aiming to achieve a throughput of 300 million tonnes by the end of this year, said Logistics Week.
The port handled 9.5 million TEU last year, 1.7 million TEU more than in 2006. Its overall cargo tonnage last year was 265 million tonnes, 40.9 million tonnes more than in the preceding year, which is expected to make it the seventh largest port in the world.
The port's foreign trade cargo throughput last year continued to be the second largest among all Chinese seaports.
