The Japanese Confederation of Port and Transport Workers and the National Council of Dockworkers Union of Japan (NCDUJ) are threatening strikes at all of the country's ports.
The threat follows six unsuccessful rounds of wage discussions. The next round of negotiations is slated for April 17.
A spokesman for the 20,000 member NCDUJ has said workers were not looking for wage rises, they just wanted salaries to remain as they were. “Ever since our industry was de-regulated in 2006, our members have seen their salaries cut. This must stop," he said.
The spokesman also said port workers wanted the creation of a fund for victims of work-related asbestosis.
