McMurdo safety equipment awarded Type Approval for Russian shipping

Three key safety products from McMurdo have been awarded a second Type Approval in Russia from Morsviazsputnik. The SMARTFIND E5 EPIRB and GPS-equipped SMARTFIND G5 EPIRB, along with the McMurdo S4 Rescue SART, are already selling successfully in Russian territory following an initial Type Approval from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. The additional Type Approval means that the Smartfind EPIRB and S4 SART can now be sold to any Russian SOLAS or IMO legislated vessel.

The British manufactured SMARTFIND range of EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) features both a non-hazardous battery and high brightness LED locator light while the McMurdo S4 Rescue SART (Search and Rescue Transponder) is a very simple-to-operate hand held unit which transmits a response signal to nearby ships’ radar, enabling its position to be pinpointed easily.

The SmartFind is certified by COSPAS SARSAT, the international satellite-based search and rescue system, so is compliant with maritime regulations. Both models have a battery status monitor and a 5 year battery change interval. The SMARTFIND G5 model offers an additional high level of accuracy with its integral GPS receiver which gives visual indication of GPS acquisition.

The S4 SART is a 9GHz X-band Search and Rescue radar transponder, so that when a radar signal is received from a ship or aircraft, the S4 Rescue automatically transmits a response signal. This clearly identifies the survival craft on the radar screen by means of a stream of 12 in-line dots. Once activated the S4 will remain in standby mode for over 96 hours and is waterproof to 10 metres.

McMurdo, a division of Signature Industries Ltd. is a world leading producer of Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs), VHF Radios and NAVTEX for the maritime and leisure markets, including shipping, yachting, aviation and outdoor adventure pursuits. The high quality product range is manufactured in the UK utilising the very latest technology available, and in partnership with the world’s safety regulatory organisations.
