Deepwater seaport is to be built in Karelian Belomorsk, press center of Karelian government cites Andrei Kyachin, Director General of Belomorsky Port CJSC as saying June 4 at the meeting of the work group dedicated to attraction of investments into Karelian economy.
The port of Belomorsk is a new deepwater commercial seaport with an up-to date complex for transshipment of coal and other cargo to the amount of 9 million tonnes per year with a possibility to raise throughput to 15 million tonnes. The port is being created on the basis of the former coal berth and fishing port.
The construction of the new port is valued at some RUR 9.5 billion. Design and exploration works are to be completed in 2008, the construction is to begin in 2009. The port is to be put into operation in 2011. The project is to be implemented under public-private partnership principle with attraction of resources of the RF Investment Fund. The new port is to ensure creation of over 400 new work places.
The port capable of handling 30,000-dwt vessels will ensure the shortest link Urals, Siberia, Middle Asia and China with the North Europe. As for Russia, the White Sea is a region providing direct entry to the Atlantic ocean.
According to Kyachin, deputy head of Karelian Government Pavel Chernov ordered the Republic’s Ministry of the Economic Development to assist the investor in the project implementation including coordination at the federal level.
