Import cargo soared 167 per cent to 20,388 TEU, while export cargo increased 72 per cent to 19,460 TEU, both setting an all-time-high.
The report said the strong growth in Rizhao's container volume was a result of the local customs' effort in reforming the customs clearance procedures to provide greater convenience.
One of the new measures is simplifying clearance procedures for shippers from hinterland regions so they only have to go through the procedures at the local customs for once before their cargo can be shipped away via Rizhao port.
The second measure is allowing local shippers or those from hinterland regions to go through clearance procedures at the Rizhao customs for only once before their cargo can be shipped via feeder service to the port Qingdao and be transshipped there, which is larger and operates more international lines.
During the first four months of this year, Rizhao's import and export cargo shipped under the second operation mode amounted to 23,925 TEU, taking up 60 per cent of the total.
The customs' third measure is cooperating with customs of other cities, such as Nanjing, Manzhouli, Alashankou and Dongguan, on offering shippers one-stop clearance service to further facilitate trade.
These three measures were said to have successfully won more cargo sources for Rizhao.
