Murmansk governor cries fault to Moscow

The Murmansk regional administration highly is disappointed about federal authorities’ decision not to grant the Port of Murmansk status ad special economic zone.

-We have not seen the protocol yet, we await a motivation of the rejection, Governor Yuri Yevdokimov said to RIA Novosti according to Barentsobserver.com. The regional administration will now have to consider whether it will participate in a second tender to be held in October this year.

-We need to understand the reason for the rejection. After all, top specialists on all levels, including the Federal Agency on Special Economic Zones have said that Murmansk has a go-ahead position in this issue, Mr. Yevdokimov underlined.

Murmansk had handed in two applications in the tender, one for a special economic zone on the eastern side of the Kola Bay and one on the western side of the bay. The special commission under the Ministry of Economic Development however only granted the Port of Khabarovsk the free zone status.

Murmansk has major plans for port development. By year 2010, shipping turnover is to be increased to an annual 28,5 million tons and then by 2020 to 52 million tons. A major new coal terminal with 18 million ton capacity is projected on the western side of the Kola Bay. Also a 25 million ton oil terminal is planned in the area.
