Blast on Rainbow Star injures 15 at Kreuz Shipyard

Fifteen workers were injured after a fire broke out on board Orchid Star Pte Ltd. platform supply vessel Rainbow Star, which was undergoing repair works at Swiber Holdings' Kreuz Shipyard in Singapore, according to media reports.

All 15 victims are foreigners believed to be in their 20s and 30s from Bangladesh, India and Indonesia.  Four out of the 15 were understood to have been warded in an intensive care unit at a local hospital, including a man who suffered burns on 90-per-cent of his body.

The Belize-registered vessel has been undergoing repair works at the yard since March.  Painting work was being carried out on the vessel when the fire broke out yesterday noon.

The Ministry of Manpower last night issued a stop-work order on all painting jobs at Kreuz.

Rainbow Star was originally scheduled to set sail for Thailand this week.  Kreuz and Orchid Star could not be reached for further comments at press time.
