Helsinki encourages cruise ship companies to protect the Baltic Sea

This summer, cruise ships can leave their waste water at Helsinki without a separate charge, the port informs. The Port of Helsinki has built sewers and receiving bays at cruise ship quays. The present aim is to achieve a considerable increase in the volume of waste water left by cruise ships. The volume of waste water left by cruise ships will be monitored and the ship or shipping company with the biggest increase in waste water pumped onto shore will be rewarded at the end of the season.
Scheduled passenger ships have already been pumping their waste water onto shore for quite some time. By law, waste water can be discharged into the sea at a distance of 12 nautical miles from the shore.
The Port of Helsinki’s cargo traffic close to the level of the record year 2007 and passenger volumes increased
The volume of the Port of Helsinki’s unitised cargo traffic reached 3.9 tonnes between January and April, a decrease of approximately 3% over the same period last year. The volume of containers was 143,000 TEU and rubber-tyred units numbered 180,000, a decrease of 4% for each.
Passenger traffic increased by 5% from last year. There were over 2.4 million passengers, of whom 66% used the Tallinn services and 30% used the Stockholm services. The passenger services transported 220,000 cars or vans, an increase of 16%.
