In 2007, the ports of the Leningrad region handled 99 million tonnes, while this year they are to handle 110-115 million tonnes, Grigory Dvas, Vice-Governor of the Leningrad region said at international conference “Safety of Ports and Multimodal Transport Complexes”. According to Grigory Dvas, the port of Ust-Luga is to demonstrate the fastest growth in the region. In 2007 it handled 16 million tonnes. Within the nearest two years the port’s throughput is to raise to 55-60 million tonnes, by 2015 to 120 million tonnes. Besides, there is a plan to build the second branch of Baltic Pipeline System to Ust-Luga. Grigory Dvas also told Oktyabrskaya Railway (branch of Russian Railways) plans to transfer its junction station from Volkhovstoi to Mga thus enabling Ust-Luga to raise its throughput to 120 million tonnes.
