According to Igor Pankov, the Varandey project proved its efficiency though icebreaking assistance requires extra analysis.
LUKOIL completed construction of the 12-mln t oil terminal Varandey in 2008. The terminal commenced round-the-year oil shipment in June 2008.
The terminal is designed for offshore export of the oil extracted by LUKOIL in Timan-Pechora oil and gas province, first of all, Yuzhno Khylchuyu field put into operation in summer 2008.
The terminal comprises the following facilities: on-shore tank farm with design capacity of 325,000 cubic meters, ice-strengthened berth some 22 km from the shore, two subsurface pipelines with the diameter of 820 mm each linking the tank farm and the berth, oil metering station, auxiliary tanks, pumping station, power supply facilities, base camp and other infrastructure facilities. Total investment in the construction amounted to $1.1 bln including $163 mln in 2008.
From Varandey, 70,000 DWT ice-breaking shuttle tankers deliver oil to a floating storage tanker located in ice-free waters near Murmansk from where 150,000 DWT tankers transport it to the Western Europe and the USA. In 2008, the terminal handled some 2 million tonnes of oil.
