Azov-Don basin cargo turnover up 1.6% Jan-Sep, 2009
Azov-Don basin cargo turnover increased by 1.6% (up to 14.856 million tons) in January-September, 2009 as compared to same period of the previous year. As per RBC information, grain and oilseeds export in the ports of the region increased by 94.5% (up to 5.422 million tons) in January-September, 2009. Sulphur shipments went up by 16.1% (up to 1.52 million tons), oil cargo transit volume grew by 5.8% (up to 3.2 million tons).
At the same time coal export volumes went down by 20.09% (to 1.013 million tons), scrap metal volumes reduced by 2.5 times (to 513.727 thousand tons), cement import from Turkey suffered 3-time decrease (to 400.924 thousand tons).
Azov-Don basin administration is in charge for the Don from Tsimlyanskoe water storage basin to the Azov Sea (except for Konstantinovsky and Nikolaevsky hydro systems) and Azov-Don canal which is 39.3 km long and located in North-Eastern part of the Taganrog Bay in the Azov Sea. Besides, the administration is responsible for navigation in such Don’s feeders as the Severski Donets and Manytch. Total length of the water ways managed by the administration amounts to 800 km.
