Taipei Port berths 3, 4 to open in 2010
Taipei Port Container Terminal (TPCT) in Taiwan is expected to open berths number three and four in 2010, after its first two berths officially began operations in March with a combined annual container handling capacity of 1.1 million TEU.
Berth three is expected to open in June 2010, followed by berth four by the end of next year.
The terminal operating company plans to develop a total of seven berths by 2014, with an estimated aggregate annual box handling capacity of four million TEU. The total quay length is envisioned to measure 2,366 metres on a site covering 110 hectares of reclaimed land in Danshui, which lies 20 kilometres from the capital Taipei, reports AXS-Alphaliner in a weekly newsletter.
Taiwanese shipping lines Evergreen, Wan Hai and Yang Ming each hold stakes of 50 per cent, 40 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, in TPCT. Total investment in the terminal development project is said to be US$600 million on a 50-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
