Goteborg builds a new facility for crude oil transit
Within two years time, the Port of Gothenburg’s new facility for crude oil transit is to be finished. An underground cavern at the port facility Torshamnen is to be prepared for storage of crude oil. Earlier, the caverns have been utilised for contingency stockpiling of oil products, but have been out of use for a long time.
Today, about 9 million tons of crude oil are handled at Torshamnen. With the new facility, the port hopes to attract traffic mainly from Russia for unloading, temporary storage in the cavern and transshipment of the oil to larger tonnage. The port estimates an increase in crude oil volumes of 20–60 per cent.
”Only few other ports can offer crude oil transit, which makes this an ever more interesting investment”, says Magnus Kårestedt, chief executive at the Port of Gothenburg.
