Riga Port must become Belarus' main port, Slesers says
Riga Port must become Belarus' main port, Riga Vice Mayor Ainars Slesers (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) pointed out in a press conference yesterday.
Slesers pointed out that Belarus does not have any port, and that Riga is the closest port to this country. ''Due to unsuccessful politics, most of Belarus' goods go through Lithuania, however, it is still possible to regain this flow of goods and attract Belarus entrepreneurs to use our port.''
Slesers, who is also the Riga Port's chairman of the board, pointed out that a grain terminal is to be constructed at the port, which would be used by local farmers. Also, constructed will be safe terminals to store chemical products, writes LETA.
''We must increase the port's turnover by 10 million tons next year,'' the politician pointed out.
As reported, Slesers wishes to increase Riga Port's turnover to 50 million tons within the next year.
