Big Port of St.-Petersburg cargo turnover down 20% Jan-Sep, 2009
Big port of St.-Petersburg cargo turnover decreased by 20% (to 37 million 45.5 thousand tons) in January-September, 2009 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. As per statistics information of FGU Big port of St.-Petersburg Administration the volume of liquid cargo transhipment increased by 4% (11 million 890.3 thousand tons), of non-ferrous metals – by 28% (to 1 million 378.5 thousand tons).of coal and charred coal - by26% (to 1 million 976.9 thousand tons). The volume of ferrous metals transhipment decreased by 3% (to 2 million 958.2 thousand tons), scrap metals - by 56% (to 693.8 thousand tons), refrigerated cargoes – by 31% (to 2 million 38.8 thousand tons), timber – by 90% (to 98.1 thousand tons).
Container turnover decreased to 938 thousand 366 TEU.
In September the cargo transhipment volume in the port decreased by 11% (to 4 million 689.1 thousand tons) as compared to the same period of the previous year.
Turnaround of shipping amounted to 17 thousand 385 units (8,680 entries + 8,705 exits) within nine months, 2009.
The port of Saint-Petersburg is located in the Neva river estuary in Neva Bay, in the East end of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The Neva, Neva Bay, Kronstadt and a complex of protective structures of St.-Petersburg (a dam) are located within the port. About 30 stevedoring companies work in the territory of the port, the port Administration informed.
