Citing figures released by China's Ministry of Transport, National Bureau of Statistics and General Administration of Customs, it said that China's major ports handled 4.5 billion tons of cargo between January and August, an increase of 4.9 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Within this total, coastal ports handled 3.105 billion tons of cargo, up 4.8 per cent year-on-year, while cargo throughput at river ports rose 5.2 per cent to 1.39 billion tons.
The report noted that in the first eight months of the year, China ports handled 1,403 million tons of foreign trade cargo, an increase of 3.1 per cent against the same period in 2008.
Within this total, coastal ports handled 1.28 billion tons of foreign trade goods, up 2.4 per cent year-on-year and river ports saw foreign trade volumes grow by 12 per cent to 122.16 million tons of cargo.
