India's Dhamra Port to be operational in May 2010 - ET
ET reported that Dhamra Port Company Ltd is confidant of going operational by the end of April, 2010 notwithstanding a public interest litigation case filed before the Apex Court seeking a halt to work on the Port, promoted by TATA Steel and L&T, citing threat to the endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
Mr Santosh Mohapatra CEO of DPCL met chief minister of Orissa to apprise him about the progress of the port’s construction work.
Mr Mohapatra told The ET that “Nearly 3000 skilled and unskilled people will be given employment in the port which will have 13 berths, capable of handling more than 83 million tonne per annum of dry bulk, liquid bulk, break bulk and container cargo adding that if all goes well, the DPCL would be able to stick to the deadline.”
Mr Mohapatra said that in phase-I, the DPCL is constructing two fully mechanized berths of 350 meters each along with backup facilities for handling imports of coking coal, steam or thermal coal, limestone and export of iron ore. He informed that the estimated capacity of phase-I is 25 million tonne per annum.
TATA Steel and Larsen and Toubro hold equal stakes in the Dhamra port project which is being developed by the DPCL for INR 2,463 crore on a build, own, operate share and transfer basis. The construction work for the 62 kilometer rail link from Dhamra to Bhadrak on the main Howrah-Chennai line is almost complete.
