Maersk buys up 150pc more breakbulk
Near-forgotten breakbulk has been more greatly esteemed in the downturn by Maersk Line with its purchase of 10,000 new flat-rack and open-top containers - a 150 per cent increase in such equipment.
Maersk said the new units represent a big improvement in its breakbulk capacity, reports American Shipper. "Breakbulk cargo is easily integrated into the cargo mix on the wide variety of ships deployed on current routes," the company said.
Surviving breakbulk carriers offer services intermittently and based on specific if not sporadic demand, said the company. Thus, breakbulk shippers are subject to irregular, inefficient carriers, Maersk feels it can do better by adapting its established and consistent scheduled services to the special needs of breakbulk shippers.
"Breakbulk shippers can more readily reap the rewards of an efficient, sustainable supply chain," said the company," said North America project sales chief Ed Long.
