Marseilles-Fos box traffic climbs 25 percent in Jan-Sept
Container traffic at the twin ports of Marseilles and Fos in the first nine months of 2009 climbed by 25 percent over the same period last year, the French port said Wednesday.
Container throughput at Fos reached 420,481 20-foot units in the period although the overall container increase at the ports of Marseilles and Fos only reached 660,631 TEUs because of a slump in intra-Mediterranean traffic handled in Marseilles’ Eastern harbor.
Difficulties in other cargo sectors led to a 15 percent decline in the twin ports’ overall tonnage, which dropped to 61.77 million metric tons because of sharp drops in oil, dry bulk and liquid bulk volumes.
Container tonnage rose 4 percent to contribute 6.5 million metric tons to the general cargo total of 10.8 million metric tons, which was a decrease of 7 percent for the period.
Roll-on, roll-off traffic fell by 9 percent to 3.1 million metric tons due to Mediterranean market conditions.
Breakbulk volumes fell 40 percent to 1.2 million metric tons in the period because of reduced demand for steel products.
