Matrix, Oman Oil preparing to supply bunker fuel via barge in Sohar

The joint venture between Matrix Marine Holding and Oman Oil Marketing Company -- Omanoil Matrix Marine Services LLC -- will start offering delivered bunker fuel via bunker barges at the Omani port of Sohar later this month, an industry source close to the company said Tuesday. "That can only start after they get the environmental permit and some other documentation from the government," the source said. The company had already started offering delivered low sulfur marine gasoil via trucks last month. In January, both Matrix Marine and Oman Oil had said in a joint statement that they will offer marine fuels of different grades to vessels calling at the port of Sohar from mid-June 2010.
Meanwhile, the port of Sohar is developing a major deepwater bulk jetty to support bulk shipping needs of Brazilian mining conglomerate Vale, which is building a huge iron ore pelletizing and distribution centre at the industrial port, the port said in a statement late Monday.  The port is also developing a general dry bulk and aggregates terminal, which will give the port the capacity to handle bulk imports and exports of aggregates as well as commodities like limestone and coal. The port of Sohar lies in close proximity to international shipping lanes and especially to traffic moving into and out of the Strait of Hormuz, making the port a promising bunkering hub.
