Kolkata plans port-cum-rail projects

The Indian Union Shipping Ministry has announced a clutch of port-cum-rail connectivity projects which aim to address the problem of draft being faced by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), the Hindu reported.
The projects, to be implemented mostly in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, are estimated to cost around US$382.4 million with some components expected to be ready by December 2011.
Union Minister of State for Shipping, Mukul Roy, said that talks had already been held with the Union Railways Minister about rail connectivity for a proposed container terminal at Diamond Harbour.
Roy said that while the container terminal was proposed to be built at Diamond Harbour to solve the draft problem of the Kolkata Dock System, four berths were proposed to be built at Salukkhali near Haldia to meet the problem of declining draft of the Haldia Dock Complex.
