Kazakhstan hikes freight transport tariffs by 15% next year

Kazakhstan Temir Joly, the National Railway Company plans to hike tariffs on cargo transportation by 15% in 2011, the KTJ President’s advisor Edil Iskakov said Thursday in an interview with journalists in Alma-Ata, RZD-Partner.Ru reports.

"It is planned to increase freight tariffs, and possibly passenger, but the tariff issue is still pending. Anyhow, the passenger tariff is a social issue and should be carefully considered. We are planning to raise freight tariffs by average 15%”, Mr. Iskakov said.

These measures are aimed at improving the company’s efficiency. "It is well known that the passenger traffic is unprofitable business everywhere and require government subsidies. It is urgent to raise passenger tariff this year that we could make our company efficient. All this is needed to obtain the investments in the rolling stock", Mr. Iskakov was quoted as saying.

"We’ve had a 5-year plan and program for the development of passenger traffic, which provides for the necessary investments to upgrade our rolling stock. It contains all the mechanisms: as well the state budget, grants, as the gradual increase of fares in order to reach breakeven. The problem can not be solved immediately, at least not this year," he said.

Kazakhstan Temir Joly is part of Samruk-Kazyna, the state-run National Welfare Fund.
