Six-month throughput of Liepaja port down 1.5%, to 2m tons

Freight flows via the port of Liepaja (Latvia) in January-June 2010 decreased by 1.5% compared with the same period last year, to 2 million 26,9 thousand tons, PortNews IAA reports citing the Port Authority.

In the reporting period grain volume dropped 23%, to 625.200 tons, petroleum products surged 77.7%, to 224,000 tons, while crude oil fell 26.3%, to 63,200 tons, ferrous metals volume shrank by 21.5% to 224,300 tons, timber cargo rose by 29%, to 479.700 tons.

In June cargo turnover at the port amounted to 354.600 tons.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90-es at the former USSR’s naval base. Today it ranks third port in Latvia in freight traffic volumes. Half of its freight traffic volume is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2009 the port’s throughput increased by 4.6%, to 4.38 million tons.
