Goa concerned over Mormugao port expansion

The Goa Government has written to the Centre opposing the expansion plans of the south Goa-based major port Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on the grounds that the expansion will affect the environment. Moreover, the Government apprehends that it would result in dislocation of the local communities and lead to influx of migrants and creation of slums.
In a written answer to a question tabled by Mr Milind Naik of the Bharatiya Janata Party on the first day of the 15-day monsoon session of the State Assembly on Monday, the Goa Minister for Captain of Ports, Mr Nilkant Halankar, has also stated that the Government fears ecological problems to the Zuari water front in south Goa and other land and water areas.
The Government further said that the expansion plan is not possible due to the limited availability of land with MPT and the State Government.
