Trade flows via NW Customs up 11% in H1, 2010 to 48,2m tons

Freight turnover through the FCS’ North-West Customs Directorate customs zones increased by 11% in the first half of this year to 48.2 million tons. The exports rose by 7%, imports - by 29%, the NWCD’s press service said.

During the period, foreign trade turnover through the customs of NWCD jumped 43% over the same period last year, to $42.837bn, including: exports - by 51% ($20.037bn), imports - by 37% ($22,801bn).

Of the total outbound goods 97% were exported from the NW region to foreign countries. Trade turnover with CIS countries increased by 40%, with foreign countries – by 43%.

Regional enterprises exported goods to 162 countries worldwide, largely to Netherlands (33% of all outbound cargo), to United Kingdom (12%), Switzerland (9%), United States (5%) and Germany (4%).

The main export items were mineral products (55%), metals (20.9%) and wood (7.3%).

Export volume has grown thanks primarily to higher prices for commodities, the main export category of Russia, as fuel costs surged 66% and metals - by 40%.

In January-June the North-West region imported goods from 159 countries, from China (20% of all imports), from Germany (11%), USA (6%), Brazil (5%), Republic of Korea (4%) and Finland (4%).

Import growth in H1, 2010 was due to both an increase in natural volume and price increases for imported goods in Russia. Compared with the first half of 2009, prices for food products rose by 7% and chemicals products – by 17%.

The Russia’s North-West region imported primarily products of machine-building industry, which rose by 38.2% in value terms, food -  by 28% and chemical products – by 12%. In quantity terms imported engineering products increased by 40%, food products - by 20%, chemical products - by 53%.

There are 11 Russian Federation regions of total area of 1,679,1ths sq.km in the zone of responsibility of NWCD.
