Six-month coal exports via Vysotsk down 33%, to 1,06m tons

Half-year coal exports volume passing through the port of Vysotsky (Leningrad region) fell 35% from H1, 2009, to 1.06 million tons, PortNews reports citing Port Vysotsky Llc statistics.

In June coal volumes amounted to 167,206 tons.

The decline in coal exports was primarily due to continuing dredging in the port’s approach canal.

The Vysotsk has been running a project for dredging of harborage and renovation of berths for the past three years. The project works are funded from the federal budget under the Federal Target Program "Modernization of transport system of Russia (2002-2010)". The costumer is Rosmorport who contacted several specialized companies. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. This will allow the port Vysotsk to accommodate and handle 40,000-50,000dwt vessels.

Port Vysotsky Llc specializes in transshipment of Russian coal exports to Western Europe. In 2009 the stevedoring company handled 2.9m tons of coal, the level of 2008.
